Rumoured to have been the son of François de Bourbon-Vendôme (Bourbon-Vendôme, b. 6 Juni 1616 d. 25 Juni 1669) and Anna von Spanien (Habsburg-Spanien, b. 22 September 1601 d. 20 Januar 1666) and a possible brother of Ludwig XIV von Frankreich (Bourbon, b. 5 September 1638 d. 1 September 1715). However it is more likely that he was the son of François de Bourbon-Vendôme (Bourbon-Vendôme, b. 6 Juni 1616 d. 25 Juni 1669) and either Marie Anne Fouquet (Fouquet, b. 1640 d. 1716) (Daughter of fellow prisoner) or Marie ? (Saint-Mars, Coëffier) (?, b. 1626 d. 18 September 1708) (the niece of his lifelong Jailor Bénigne d'Auvergne (de Saint-Mars) (Dauvergne, b. < 1626 d. 18 September 1708). Regardless of his parentage, this young prince would have been viewed by Mazarin and the Administration of Louis XIV as a direct threat to the throne.
He is among those identified by some as the prisoner of Pignerolle and Bastile known as the man in the Iron Mask.
