Bis zum 24. Februar 1918 hieß Tallinn amtlich Reval, ein im deutschsprachigen Raum auch danach noch gebräuchlicher Name. Im Niederdeutschen lautet der Name Revel. Andere ältere Namen sind russisch Ревель (Rewel) und vormals Колывань (Kolywan), dänisch Lyndanisse, schwedisch Lindanäs oder Reuel.
