Dear Kids - Recd. Your letter some time ago and have been wating to see how we came out with the house. We have finally sold it but only got $1500 down on it, and after the sellers commission comes out we won't have but 1200 left.

We are going to try to get a little house up with it, but don't know how far it will go. Was in hopes we might get cash for it but took the best offer. Got $5500 for it. I am hoping I can spend Thanksgiving with you, but don't know as yet. Dad can't get away and I am not sure I can. But here's hoping.

We sold all our puppies but it has taken most of that money to pay our bills. So I guess the old Callin depression is still on.

I have been having a rash of some kind all over (2) me and it is in my eyes also, so I have to get over this at least partially before I can go anywhere. It is an allergy so the Dr. says. I think it is one of Florida's "finest."

Norman has been back in the hospital for 2 weeks but is home now, and a lot more in debt.

They say he has gall bladder trouble and I guess it is pretty severe. He says he is going to whip it or it will whip him before he goes back to the hospital. I haven't heard from them for over a week so maybe he is getting better.

I didn't go up this time when he was sick, because they seemed to think I shouldn't have come the other time. I was there, so from now on they will (3) have to send for me if they want me.

Yvonne isn't playing at the church anymore and we are both pretty well fed up with the clique over there. They have kicked her in the teeth a couple of times and even tho most of the church is with her, they don't have any back bone.

But like everything else I guess it will all blow over.

What was the reason for your resignation at the mission? I don't mean the reason but the objection to you. I suppose your inexperience, and having to go to school and all. Well Bob the more I see how the people who are supposed to be Christians operate in church I think you have chosen a hard profession. _over_ (4) Guess this is all I can think of, so kiss the kiddies for me and Bye Bye Love Mom + Dad

Nov 9\super th\nosupersub Dear Kids - Recd. Your birthday card. It was very pretty, Thanks. I am sure getting old. I hate that. Guess I won't grow old gracefully. And as usual I was sick on my birthday. I told you about that breaking out I have. Well I have that pretty well whipped but it is in my eyes and they itch so I can hardly stand it and I have to wear dark glasses until I get it controlled. Then to top it all off I have a bad case of aenemia and am taking shots of Vitamin B complex and liver oil every week, so it will be impossible for me to make the trip to Arizona. It makes me so mad I could kick over (2) the traces. Guess I will have to wait for you folks to come home. I have been feeling so bad that I know I couldn't make the trip at present. I hope you all have a good thanksgiving. I don't know for sure what we will do. Norman + Ruth + family are trying to come down here but he has been so sick so much I don't know wheather they will be able to make it or not. Norman is back at work. Sorry they have to act as they do t'word you, but just forget it. They will see the error someday.

If I can find Mamie's last letter I will send it to you. If not, she is back home with the hope that in 3 mo. She may be able to see out of that eye, but not definitely. She has had a terrible time and God seems to play a big part in her thinking at present. Pray for her. (3) How are my kiddies? I would sure like to see them and for a while I thot I would, but for some reason it is not to be. If everything turns out OK. I might make it later but don't plan on it.

I was just looking at Teddy's picture and he is sure all Callin. Little Vicki look more like her mother, Nancy what are you doing with that family? I bet they keep you on the jump.

It is mail time, so I want to get this off. Love, Mom + Dad Kisses for Vicki + Teddy

(post-script) Bob, Do you have a title such as Rev. or Pastor etc?

Dear Folks: This is for all of you because I don't want to use my good eye any more than I have to for a while. I suppose you have been anxiously awaiting word from me but I have had a good bit of company since I came home and done quite a bit of resting too. I was twelve days in the hospital and got a typhoid shot every other day. That was to induce chills + fever and in some way that is supposed to help clear my eye. But the day the Dr. said I could come home I told him I couldn't see a bit more

than I could before and he said, "O you must give it time, it may take 3 mos. Or more." That was my first ray of hope. I thot all the time (because no one had told me differently) that with each shot I would see a little more and I didn't. But now I am feeling much better mentally. He made me no promises but the nurse said he has been able to help 9 out of 10 of these cases. You see when they sent me out to the hospital he said I was in danger of losing my eye ball from this blood clot. And they were going to use that new drug "dicamarol" - do you (2) know anything about it? If not get the Oct. copy of the Readers Digest and read the article, "Miracle in the Haystack" I had just read the article myself before I went up there so as soon as he said Dicumarol I knew what he was talking about. I wonder if they didn't give Norman that when they had him in the hospital, it is the latest thing for clot. Well I got one dose - 3 capsules and the next day he decided I had something else more pronounced than the thrombosis and changed the treatment. I think he is a wonderful Dr. and I have all kinds of faith in him so I am being quite

cheerful and hoping + praying my eye will clear. I don't know how much but anything will be better than this awful black spot. Bertha how are you coming with your trouble? Don't let any Dr. put anything in your eyes that hurt. My Dr. says it is sure to injure the eye. One woman in my room had a new cornea put on her eye which was damaged by a Dr. putting drops in her eye that hurt. If you ever have any serious eye trouble come up to Dr. Ruedermaum [sp?]. I hope you are much better with your illness. Don't we have the darndest time. I am so disgusted with myself I could blow up. It certainly must (3) be a happy life for a man to always have a wife in the hospital. Of all the things that could go wrong with me I never dreamed of my eyes. I surely was surprised to hear that you have sold your house. You people sure do like to be in a turmoil. Red is re-modeling the kitchen and I can hardly stand it. He tried to get it done while I was in the hospital but didn't get it finished. Are you living with Yvonne again? I might as well send this to her house since I don't know your new address. I sure did appreciate your letters, Bertha, Yvonne, + Virginia. Keep the good work up. Aunt Etta is here with me for awhile. I wasn't out of bed until last Friday - that was the first I had bath room privileges. So I am taking it pretty slow for a while. Well, I hope every body down there is getting along O.K. and keep on pulling for me. I am anxiously awaiting time to do wonders for me. Write and let me know how you are Bertha. Love, Mamie

Jan. 27 Dear Kids - Thot I would drop you a few lines just recovering from the flu and now Dad has it. It is so hard to overcome it. I had the Doctor, but now I guess I'll live. Our weather has been around 80° ever since before Xmas. Guess we get too warm and then cool off too quick. Hope you are all getting along O.K. now. And how is the back? Thot of you Bob, last Sunday and wonder how you made out. If the churches out there are as choosy as ours, you would sure have a time of it getting anywhere. We have been 7 months without a pastor and I think the church is going to fall apart if we don't get a pastor pretty soon. We put in a new electronic organ and it gives out beautiful music. Something like a pip-organ. A Mr. Downes we had one Sunday has started a "old fashioined Revival Hour" like Mr Fuller in California. He has quite a good crowd in the Colliseum. Every Sun. afternoon. Of course he has quite a bit of musical talent. Bob you spoke as tho you didn't intend to leave there if you got that church.l Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but I would like to see you get your degree before you settle down to one particular church. Have you been in touch with Hardin-Timmons as yet? Mr. Frink says that is a fine school. He seemed to know all about it. Virginia is still preparing to go to the Baptist Hospital In New Orleans. Hasn't heard from them since she

sent her papers. Guess a year at Tulane will be included in that. Virginia is having quite a time getting her weight down to 160. but she sure looks nicer since she has taken about 15 lbs off. Well it looks like the Veterans are going to get a bonus or something pretty soon. I sure hope so, I know you could use it. How are Vicki + Teddy? Would like to get acquainted with them. Mike was 3 years old Jan. 21. So I guess Teddy was 2 in Nov. Do they get along well together or do they scrap like most kids. I hope Nancy's folks are O.K. Is her Dad able to work? And Nancy does your mother still raise Turkeys? I often think of that Whopper we had that Xmas. Well, Dad + I are living in our little house but we are comfortable. I don't have much to do but still it can get dirty. Will send now a snapshot sometime. This pen writes then it doesn't, see! Guess this is all. Love Mom.

Thursday morning 11:00 o'clock

Dear Bob + Nancy, Vicki + Teddy - Dad just got up and felt pretty punk. Lots of people here having this I don't know what it is - but you sure feel awful. Dr. says it is a bug gets into your system. Have had no cold weather at all to drive them out. We've never had a winter like this since we came to Florida. I don't think we will use any more than the one drum of oil which we got with our stove. And we have no ceiling on the house either. It is so expensive I don't know when I will get it on. I suppose you wonder why we are so stripped of cash after selling three houses. It is not so hard to explain you see we never got completely out of debt. We bought all of these lots of Mr. Kimber and every time we sold, we, of coruse had to pay him off before we could give a deed to the property. That gave us very little to go on to build again. Of course, if we had gotten all cash it would have been different. But we only got $1500 down on each of the last two. Of course we get a good monthly payment on the mortgages

But it takes all and more to pay on our monthly payments for things we bought to put in the houses. We will have these paid out in from 17 to 20 months and then the income from our mortgages will be clear. We are quite comfortable in our little house tho it is far from being finished. Most everything we have in it is new and we don't owe a dime on it. Only Kimber for the lot. If I can only keep my health and work for another two years the prospects are quite bright for us to ge quite independent and happy. I sure wish we could come to Arizona for a couple of months, but the only possible way we could make it would be to sell again. If we do that we will come out for sure. We have not put the new house on the market, but you never can tell what may happen. Bob, if you feel a spell coming on with your back better cut down on the eats. That helps a little. Dads back is trying to go into a tailspin this morning. Guess I have about run out. Give our regards to Nancy's folks and we may see all of you some day. Love Dad
