1465, il fut capturé par l’atabeg Qvarqvaré III de Samtskhé ainsi que son oncle Georges VIII. Il réussit à s’échapper et à s’enfuir en Iméréthie où il réclama les droits hérités de sa mère.
1465-1478, il se proclama co-roi de Géorgie et combatit en vain son demi-frère Bagrat VI également proclamé roi de Karthli.
1478, il chassa le fils de Bagrat VI, Alexandre II proclamé roi de Géorgie, et il s'empara de la double couronne de Karthli et d’Iméréthie.
1483, il fut défait par l’atabeg Qvarqvaré III de Samtskhé à Aradeti et il perdit la couronne d’Iméréthie qui revint provisoirement au roi Alexandre II.
1488-1490, il associa ses quatre fils ainés au trône.
1490-1491, le royaume de Géorgie fut divisé en plusieurs entités.
