My Father Joseph Henry Jansen 1876-1943 Born in Cincinnati on Nov. 1, 1876. He attended St. Anthony School. When he was in his early teens he almost died of what today would be called a ruptured appendix but was then known as inflammation of the bowels. The fact that he survived was a testimony of a strong constitution, but he was sick for a whole year. I think it might have stunted his growth for he was only 5' 8 1/2". After graduating from the 8th grade Dad went to work for a carriage factory varnishing wheels. Work in those days was a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week, but Dad found time to take music lessons on the violin from Professor Schell. He told how the father told his son "If you only had this young man's ambition you might amount to something." Later on the son also Alfred Schell was well known as an organist and composer and directed the St. lawrence choir. It was though the violin that Dad met my mother for her brother Henry played the guitar and he and my father were friends and Mom played the mandolin so they formed a string trio for their own entertainment. Later Dad put himself through Dental College by working in the the summer and going to school in the winter. After graduating he opened a n office in Fayetteville, Oh. The endeavor lasted a year and was not a success. People in those days were not educated to preventive dentistry and farmers did not have the money. He returned to the city and worked for Dr. Parvy Hill on Court St. near Plum for a number of years, later opening an office on 7th near Elm. This building was later torn down and an addition to Shillitos erected there. He moved from there to the Provident Bank Bldg. where I worked for him. At first he worked from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon., Wed,. and Fri. and 8 to 6 Tues., Thurs., and Sat., and 9 till noon Sundays. After they were married Mom and Dad lived on Laurel St. near Lynn. This is now Lincoln Park Dr. Joe and I were both born there. When I was six months old they moved to 979 Kirbert where they spent the rest of their lives. Dad was a very progressive person and far ahead of the times in many ways. He loved to work in the yard and even with the long hours at work would get up first light to work in the garden. He always grew his tomato plants and had a large variety of them. He also found time a short time later to join with other amateur musicians to form an orchestra. They played for church affairs, festivals and the Passion Play one year. He was a wonderful father really caring for us and doing everything possible for us. He died after a short illness of ten days. Both Mom and Dad are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery at West Eighth & Enright.
