We are told that Gawkroger means "left-handed" or left-handed Roger. It would seem that like the ancient Kendall family, ancestors of Francis Kendall of Woburn, 1640, who from 1400 to the present day are marked at intervals with extra fingers and toes, there was probably a branch of the Platts family who were left-handed or gawky.
